Creating the mission statement for BetterUConnect has been a journey akin to a biblical wrestling match. As the founder, I, Samson Baldwin, have spent years wrestling with the essence of what BetterUConnect truly represents, much like Jacob in the Bible who wrestled with a man who seemed to be an image of Christ. Jacob's wrestling match lasted all night because he refused to let go until he received a blessing. When the man asked Jacob his name, and Jacob replied, the man said, “Your name will no longer be Jacob, but Israel, because you have struggled with God and with humans and have overcome.”
This story resonates deeply with me. For over seven years, I have struggled to articulate the official mission statement for BetterUConnect. I believe that a mission statement is crucial, especially in the early stages of a business when making initial impressions. This statement should be a concise and comprehensive introduction to your business, encompassing everything you do and the mission you are on, from your purpose to your business goals.
Up until a week ago, I was constantly bouncing between different mission statements. I spoke to many people, each offering their perspective on what the mission statement should be. However, the thing about being a visionary is that others do not see the vision as clearly as you do because God gave it to you. Amidst the pressure to solidify a mission statement now that we are public, I did what I should have always done from the beginning—I went to God.
God brought to my mind a scene from the movie "One Love," where Bob Marley asked someone if they knew the Bible. The man responded affirmatively, and Bob Marley said, “The message is the same, but the vehicle is music.” This dialogue stuck with me, and when I finally asked the Creator for guidance, I heard it loud and clear: "The message is the same. The vehicle is business."
Thus, the mission statement for BetterUConnect was born: "To express the Word of God through business." For me, it is perfect—clear and supportive of everything we stand for as a company.
The full mission statement is: "We provide support to businesses operated by individuals walking in their purpose and serving the community." This is how we impact the world. We support those pillars in our community who start businesses out of their testimonies and God-given gifts, businesses that are designed to provide for God’s people.
If you are someone living in your purpose and running a business that God has called you to, we want to support you and connect you with others who are doing the same. This is the Kingdom of God—His people on Earth, called into His purpose, united in their mission to serve and uplift the community through their God-given talents and businesses.
Join us at BetterUConnect, where we strive to build collaborative economics within the Black community through our platform of organized resources and community-focused events. Together, we can express the Word of God through business, making a lasting impact on the world.
