The Legacy of Black Wall Street

In the 1920s, Greenwood, Oklahoma—known as Black Wall Street—was a thriving hub of Black economic power. Over 300 Black-owned businesses thrived in this self-sustaining community, where the dollar circulated within the Black economy as many as 100 times before leaving.

This powerful legacy shows what is possible when Black communities unite to create wealth and opportunity. However, the devastating Tulsa Race Massacre of 1921 destroyed this flourishing economy.

Black Wall Street’s legacy serves as a beacon of hope and a reminder of the importance of creating spaces for Black businesses to thrive.

Challenges Facing Black Entrepreneurs Today

Despite the progress, Black-owned businesses face significant hurdles:

  • Higher Failure Rates: 80% of Black-owned businesses fail within the first 18 months of operation, compared to a national average of 30% for all small businesses.

  • Limited Access to Capital: Black entrepreneurs are twice as likely to be denied loans compared to their white counterparts, and when approved, they receive an average of $30,000 less.

  • Revenue Gaps: The average Black-owned business earns $58,000 in revenue annually, compared to $546,000 for white-owned businesses.

  • Underrepresentation: Black Americans represent 14% of the U.S. population but only own 2.3% of employer businesses.

These statistics reveal a troubling reality: many Black businesses lack the resources, networks, and support systems necessary to sustain and grow.

BUC: Building a Community-Centered Digital Ecosystem

BetterUConnect is addressing these challenges by creating a platform that connects individuals and businesses to the resources, exposure, and community support they need to thrive.

What We’re Doing Right Now

BUC is committed to showcasing our members across our social media platforms and newsletters. Through features, stories, and shoutouts, we are providing our members with the exposure they need to reach new audiences and build credibility in their industries.

  3. Focusing on Community-Centered Growth

We are laying the foundation for a digital ecosystem inspired by the spirit of Black Wall Street, but with global reach. Our platform aims to circulate support and resources within the community, ensuring that individuals and businesses alike can grow and thrive.
